2. Rose of Sharon After the ChangeMy beliefs and values are very much like Rose of Sharon’s after the point in the book where she changes. She starts out a strong individualist, only caring about herself, and not letting anyone tell her what to do. Her act of breast-feeding the starving man at the end of the book showed that she did care about others, displaying some aspects of collectivism. This collectivist act was mainly influenced by Ma Joad, which also proves the change in Rose of Sharon in allowing people to give her instruction. I have many individualist beliefs and values and make sure that I am taken care of but I also have beliefs that are more collectivist. I believe in things like welfare-capitalism and caring for each other which is what we see Rose of Sharon valuing after her change. Also I believe that rules and regulations are necessary to function effectively in society. I don’t mind being told what to do at times, as long as I still have rights to many freedoms. Rose of Sharon is able to take advice and instruction in the end of the book and is accepting of it. Both Rose of Sharon and I are fairly close to the middle of this graph because we have beliefs and values that are not extremes. We believe in some collectivist ideologies as well as some individualist ones and we are open to rules and more control as long as we still feel free to make our own choices within those boundaries. <br />
