Why now? We’re in the midst of the smartphone revolution, and smartphones are enabling Quantified Self by providing a powerful, ubiquitous, and affordable technology platform. Smartphones have made 3-axis inertial positioning sensors, which enable activity tracking, cheap and available by creating a billion-unit market. In the 1960s only 747s and nuclear submarines could afford this capability.
Plus, the smart phone is a networked computer in your pocket that can record, analyze, and display data from wearable sensors, and it provides frequent feedback, social features, and gamification that contribute to success. Forbes
Wearable device penetration is significant: 1/6th of U.S. adults own one. Ownership is highest among ages 25-34 (at 25%) but it remains strong through age 65. The market falls into two segments with different motivation patters: “fitness” which appeals to younger adults, and “wellness” which appeals to older adults.
70m devices sold in 2014, 68m projected for 2015.
• Many users make the tracker part of their life. Survey data indicates that about 50% of owners still use their device 12 months after purchase, and the trend appears to level off at about 40% long-term use (see graph above), which you could view as a glass about half-empty, or half-full (3).
• People pay attention to wearables. Research by Dr. Kamal Jethwani found that about 10% of users are “Quantified Selfers” who monitor their data and take motivation from it. Another 20%-30% can change behavior with some encouragement in addition to the data tracker (2).
There is more early evidence that feedback leads to change in behavior. Dr. Rajani Larocca, a primary care physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, conducted a small study giving trackers to diabetes patients aged 50 to 70. He found that every single person increased activity, and about 50% were still using the tracker six months later (2).

BREAKTHROUGH IN TREATMENTS & DIAGNOSIS
According to the report “Smart Pills Technologies Market (2012-2017),” the global smart pills market is expected to reach $965 million by the year 2017. The technology development is currently focused on two primary functions: wireless patient monitoring and diagnostic imaging.
Now imagine swallowing a disposable pill instead of having an invasive colonoscopy procedure. Given Imaging, an Israeli company, has made this possible. The company has developed a battery-powered camera pill that can take high-speed photos of the intestinal tract. The device then sends the images to a second device worn around the patient’s waist and then to a computer or tablet to be reviewed by a doctor.
