Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Good morning, and welcome back to the Reading for Success seminar.
  2. We’re going to start today by taking a look at an approach to reading and studying, developed right here at Auburn by Dr. Alyson Whyte and Dr. Sara Wolf which we call the Dig Deep Approach.
  3. But before we do, you see that you have a quiz answer sheet there before you, we’ll be using that to answer quiz questions on the material after we take a look at it.
  4. You can go ahead and fill in your name and today’s date. We’ll be using the sheet all weekend, but that one date will be fine. The quiz number is 38845, you can fill that in now as well.
  5. The questions you’ll answer are all multiple-choice, and…
  6. …they will appear here on the screen as we go along, so be sure you stay engaged with where we are in the slide show.
  7. Now, the questions are on a timer, so they’ll only appear on the screen here for a designated period of time.
  8. …one…
  9. …one…
  10. …one…
  11. …one…
  12. …and here’s your question. Now, notice the timing bar, here. The number here, 8, indicates that you have eight seconds to read and answer this question. As time goes by, the timing bar fills in, as you see, so that gives you a sense for how much time has gone by and how much you have left. See how that works. You simply read the question, mark your answer sheet, and then the slide transitions to the next question, or the next section of material. Pretty neat, huh?
  13. Now, we’re going to have a look at a technique to improve your reading and studying effectiveness that we call DIG DEEP, because each letter symbolizes a stage in the Dig Deep Approach. [As next six slides are rolling automatically] D-I-G, D-EE-P, that’s DIG DEEP.

  22. In addition to the letters D-I-G-D-EE-P, which will help us think about what happens in this approach, we have some photos that will help too.
  23. Here they are, and we’ll associate these photographs with the stages.

  31. The Dig Deep Approach does a couple of very important things for you.
  32. Other approaches—the kind that are typically taught in schools—rely on natural talent or aptitude.
  33. But not the Dig Deep Approach!
  34. Successful “digging deep” with the Dig Deep Approach depends on effort alone.
  35. Thus, you can make great use of this approach, if you care to do so. If you don’t, then that’s your own choice, and your own business, but if you want to make your efforts across the spectrum of college-level study more effective, the Dig Deep Approach offers that to you—if you’re willing to expend the effort.
  36. The Dig Deep Approach relies on perseverance. What’s perseverance?
  37. That’s right. Perseverance means sticking with something until it’s done, and I mean all the way done. Not halfway done. All the way done.
  38. In the long run, perseverance is what permits success—in college, and in most other things you’ll do in your life. You have to stick with the program all the way to the end, and of course, most of you know that already.
  39. Okay, let’s look at each stage or phase of the Dig Deep Approach, beginning with the D.
  40. The D stands for Determine What’s Important. Here we see some kids who evidently know that it is important to play, and that’s true even when you’re not so much a kid anymore, like me. Determine what’s important.
  41. What’s is important about college anyway? Probably everyone in your life has told you you have to work hard in school so you can get into college, and here you are. What it is that goes on here, exactly, and where do you go from here?
  42. Bringing the focus to a particular reading or studying task, you find yourself asking, “What’s my job here? What’s the point of reading a particular selection or writing a paper or doing a project of some kind?” You should think about this before you invest a lot of time and energy in the wrong direction.
  43. Once you clearly understand what your job is and what the point of it all is, then you have to ask yourself: “What information do I need to do my job?” It’s going to vary according to the task you have before you, but you must be clear in your mind to make the best use of your limited time and resources.
  44. Finally, you should have a good conception of what you need to get the point or achieve the goal. Once you have those ideas clearly in your mind, then you can proceed to the next stage of the Dig Deep Approach.
  45. The next stage, the I in Dig Deep, is Investigate Your Sources, and here we see some students in one of those old libraries they used to have, with upholstered chairs and leather-bound books. The Auburn library isn’t like what you see here—it’s a lot more useful to you in the long run.
  46. To begin with, you have to have some sources, so the first order of business is to brainstorm to think of some, based on what you know the job is. If you’re trying to find something on a current event, a newspaper or magazine might be a good place.
  47. You might keep your mind open to unusual or un-thought-of sources. If you’re trying to find something on something local, perhaps you could look something up, but you might be able to find someone to interview. There are all sorts of sources you might consider, and any of them might be worthy of your attention.
  48. You will end up selecting sources according to the job or task you face, the purpose, or the point of your work.Investigate your sources is the second stage, the I in Dig Deep. Let’s move on to the next stage.
  49. The third stage, G, is Get Information from Your Sources, and here we some students that are involved in doing just that.
  50. The “get information from your sources” begins as you locate your sources, whatever they are. And by “locate,” I mean go and put your hands on them. That will almost certainly involve a trip to the library or other facility, although you can do a lot from your computer right at home.
  51. Then you use tools based on the sources to find the information you need.
  52. Tools like the table of contents that most nonfiction books have. Tools like photos or graphs that might be in the book.
  53. Tools like the index that can often be found in the back of a book, or electronic bookmarks that might be in a web-based source.
  54. Sources might involve tools like chapter or section headings and footnotes or endnotes. Some books might be equipped with summaries after chapters and sections, which can be very helpful to students looking for specific information. However you proceed, this is the stage where you get that essential information out of your source material.
  55. The next stage is the Draft a “Bird’s Eye View” Summary Stage, and here we see a bird’s eye view of—anybody know where this is? That’s right, it’s the lovely city of Toronto, Quebec. A little cold in the winter, but other than that, it’s a great place.
  56. This will require that you actively engage with the material at hand. You should look at it, see it, read it, hear it, if that’s possible, touch it, whatever you can do to involve the senses.
  57. Then you will be in a good position to find and extract the essential and relevant information.
  58. This might involve taking notes or drawing pictures…
  59. It might involve making diagrams of some kind. Some people even audio record the information they’re interested in and listen to it when they’re driving or working out. Whatever you find that works for you, you should do.
  60. Some people make outlines of their material, and this can be very useful. Whatever you do, think outside the box and innovate to find something that works best for you. Once you’ve drafted a “bird’s eye” summary, then you’re ready to move to the next stage, and this next stage involves both of the letters “E” in Dig Deep. We take those two together in a single stage.
  61. This stage is the examine and elaborate stage, and here we see a woman who seems to be examining the top of a food product of some kind. Almost certainly, she is silently elaborating on the product and deciding whether she wants it or not, but we’re going to want to do that out loud as much as possible.
  62. In this stage, you are seeking to organize the material across your sources in order to find not only common themes or areas of intersection, but how the sources differ in what they say. Doing this might involve writing a draft of a paper, it might involve doing a project, or executing an idea of some kind. In doing these things, you organize and combine information from some or all of your sources.
  63. This might also involve coming to a decision about something, as the woman we saw in the photo seemed to be trying to do. You might try a variety of things to be innovative and find what works for you. I was in a class once where we studied plays, and a group of us got together and recorded the plays, each of us taking a character, and we found that the process of doing this really helped us understand what was going on. You can innovate to find what works for you.
  64. Then you must present the information in some way. Someone important once said that when you teach something, you learn it twice, and many professors require their students to teach some of the class material to the other students. This is why they do that.
  65. Presenting the information might involve producing a final version of a paper and posting it to your blog, as I often do; it might involve making a statement or doing something so that you make a memory, or it might simply involve one of those “a-ha!” moments when you finally come to an understanding about something.
  66. The last stage in the Dig Deep Approach is P, Put your Work to the Test, and here we see a man putting his bike to the test, or maybe himself, on a trail ride.
  67. Putting your work to the test involves evaluation of the product you produced whatever it was and also an evalaution of the process you used to create that product. By evaluating the process as well as the product, we fine-tune the tools as we go along so that the next time you use them, they’ll work better for you.
  68. Evaluating the process involves considering how what you did might be improved and by considering what worked for you as you went through the Dig Deep Approach—and what didn’t work. Think about why this might be so, and then you can make adjustment for the next time around.
  69. So there you have it. The Dig Deep Approach. Let’s review the six stages of the process together, then we’ll take a short quiz.
  70. What was that first stage? The first D? That’s right, it was Decide What’s Important, the stage where you get clear in your mind what the situation is and what your job or role in that situation is.
