Extractor fans should be neither seen nor heard. In our kitchens and bathrooms they do an essential job

bathroom had an air vent? Well, the answer to that in fact is yes. Extractor fans are one of those
installations that fall under the auspices of building regulations, so you should always consider installing
one.
In order for an extractor fan to work correctly you need to choose one which is the right size for the
room. If it is too small, it will struggle to clear a bathroom of steam. This needs to be worked out by
multiplying width by height and the length of the room - you are then left with a figure in cubic metres.
Where will the fan be situated?
You have three choices here. It can be mounted on the ceiling, on the wall or conversely you can go for
an inline mounted fan. The latter has many advantages. It is housed away from the bathroom - for
instance in the attic. Because of this the power is not limited by the amount of space available; both fan

3. vibration and overall noise can be kept to an absolute minimum and it is also possible to create multiple
exhaust points via one fan.
Which zone?
If you go for an extractor fan on your ceiling or wall you will need to decide where in that huge space is
the best place to put it. It needs to be at its safest, most effective, least visible and where it will fall best
into the overall design of your bathroom.
Builders divide the bathroom into three zones. Zone 0, zone 1 and zone 2. Zone 0 is the bath itself and I
don't know about you but I prefer to take my faithful yellow rubber duck in the bath than a highly
dangerous extractor fan. Zone 1 is the walls directly behind the bath to just above the height of the
windows, and zone 2 is the areas outside of this. It will need out of the way of the main activity, but
nearer enough to be effective.
Types of fan
The type of fan you go for will determine the accessories you can also get. Some extractor fans will come
with a light. Others are manually switched on with a pull cord or others still are automatically switched
on when the light in the bathroom, the shower, or, in the case of the kitchen, the oven, is switched on. I
prefer the manual devices as this gives you much more control over how and when your appliance is
working. However it should also be taken into consideration that if your bathroom has no windows then
an extractor fan with a timer should be used. Most extractor fans offer both options where the timer
can be turned on and off.
