the concept wasn't named until 1999, the Internet of Things has been in development for
decades. The first Internet appliance , for example, was a Coke machine at Carnegie
Melon University in the early 1980s. The programmers could connect to the machine
over the Internet, check the status of the machine and determine whether or not there
would be a cold drink awaiting them, should they decide to make the trip down to the
machine.
Kevin Ashton, cofounder and executive director
of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, first mentioned
the Internet of Things in a presentation he
made to Procter & Gamble.

networks. Today’s cars, for example, have multiple networks to control engine
function, safety features, communications systems, and so on. Commercial and
residential buildings also have various control systems for heating, venting, and
air conditioning (HVAC); telephone service; security; and lighting. As IoT evolves,
these networks, and many others, will be connected with added security,
analytics, and management capabilities. This will allow IoT to become even more
powerful in what it can help people achieve.

These are scenarios that only existed in science fiction previously. With the coming age of
the Internet of Things, however, they are becoming a reality.
In the near future the Internet and wireless technologies will connect different sources of
information such as sensors, mobile phones and cars in an ever tighter manner. The
number of devices which connect to the Internet is seemingly exponentially increasing.
These billions of components produce consume and process information in different
environments such as logistic applications, factories and airports as well as in the work
and everyday lives of people. The society need new, scalable, compatible and secure
solutions for both the management of the ever more broad, complexly-networked Internet
of Things, and also for the support of various business models.
