shall reward for it. He gives up his desire and his food forshall reward for it. He gives up his desire and his food for

“[Fasting for] a limited number of days.
So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] -
then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And
upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a
ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day].
And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to
fast is best for you, if you only knew.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 184)

““RamaRamadhdhan is the (month) in which was sent down thean is the (month) in which was sent down the

“It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go
to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you
are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves,
so He accepted your repentance and forgave you...”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 187)

 The rule of fasting begins with intention (The rule of fasting begins with intention (NiyyatNiyyat), to be), to be

 The Fast begins from Dawn (The Fast begins from Dawn (Fajr/SubuhFajr/Subuh) until sunset () until sunset (MaghribMaghrib).).

when he fetches (or does things), and I shall be his feet when when he fetches (or does things), and I shall be his feet when
he walks. When he asks (requests) for anything I shall grant it, he walks. When he asks (requests) for anything I shall grant it,
and when he seeks refuge, I shall protect him.” and when he seeks refuge, I shall protect him.”

This is a very dangerous malady, the outcome of inquisitiveness ofThis is a very dangerous malady, the outcome of inquisitiveness of
others combined with our conceit which tends to rouse us intoothers combined with our conceit which tends to rouse us into
divulging the faults in others, is the sin of ‘divulging the faults in others, is the sin of ‘GHIBAHGHIBAH’ (backbiting)’ (backbiting)
The Prophet s.a.w. considers this sin to be worst than adultery orThe Prophet s.a.w. considers this sin to be worst than adultery or
imbibing intoxicant because these can be forgiven by Allah s.w.t.imbibing intoxicant because these can be forgiven by Allah s.w.t.
repentance whereas with “repentance whereas with “GHIBBAHGHIBBAH” this is insufficient. It requires also” this is insufficient. It requires also
the seeking of forgiveness from the one being ‘back-bited’ who maythe seeking of forgiveness from the one being ‘back-bited’ who may
require reinstating his/her honour – before Allah can forgive us this sinrequire reinstating his/her honour – before Allah can forgive us this sin

And Allah s.w.t. likens ‘And Allah s.w.t. likens ‘GHIBAHGHIBAH' to eating the flesh of your dead' to eating the flesh of your dead
brother/sister, to stress how detestable and abhorrent this sin is, Allahbrother/sister, to stress how detestable and abhorrent this sin is, Allah
asks:asks:
““Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?
Nay, you would loathe it! “Nay, you would loathe it! “

Unfortunately, many people may not be aware that what they mayUnfortunately, many people may not be aware that what they may

Thus we need to remove any ambiguity and learn the actualThus we need to remove any ambiguity and learn the actual
meaning of ‘meaning of ‘GHIBAHGHIBAH' (backbiting)' (backbiting)

““Do you know what is Do you know what is GHIBAHGHIBAH (backbiting)?” (backbiting)?”
They said: “Allah and His Messenger knows!!” He They said: “Allah and His Messenger knows!!” He then said:then said:
““Your mentioning your brother with something about Your mentioning your brother with something about
him that he dislikes [being spoken about]." him that he dislikes [being spoken about]."
Someone then asked, "How about if my brother possesses Someone then asked, "How about if my brother possesses
that [characteristic which I am mentioning]?" that [characteristic which I am mentioning]?"
He He replied, "replied, "If he possesses that which you mention, then If he possesses that which you mention, then
you have [indeed] backbitten himyou have [indeed] backbitten him. And, . And, if he does not if he does not
possess that which you say of him, then you have possess that which you say of him, then you have
slandered himslandered him." ."

[a] Injustice. One who has suffered injustice is entitled to mention
the perpetrator of that injustice to someone who is capable of
restoring his
rights to him, such as a legitimate Muslim ruler or judge or police or the
relevant authority - but not just anyone.
““Allah does not like any evil to be mentioned openly, unless it be Allah does not like any evil to be mentioned openly, unless it be
by him who has been wronged (thereby) And Allah is indeed all-by him who has been wronged (thereby) And Allah is indeed all-
hearing, all-knowing,” (hearing, all-knowing,” (Qur’an: an-Nisa’: 4: 148Qur’an: an-Nisa’: 4: 148))
FOR WHICH IT MAY BE PERMITTED

[a] Injustice. One who has suffered injustice is entitled to mention
the perpetrator of that injustice to someone who is capable of
restoring his
rights to him, such as a legitimate Muslim ruler or judge or police or the
relevant authority - but not just anyone
““Verily, those with rights, has the say.”Verily, those with rights, has the say.”

[b] Seeking help to change an evil, or to reform the wrongdoer, e.g.
discussion with peers or those who can counsel and advise him to
change. If the intention in telling the ‘GHIBAH’ is not to change the
wrong but out of malice or vengeance, or merely for fun etc. then it is
forbidden to relate it

[c] Asking for a fatwa from qualified religious scholar. A
person may say, 'My father/brother/wife has done such-and-
such to me. What can I do about it?’ This is similar to No.[b]

[d][d] WarningWarning, such as warning a prospective buyer that the, such as warning a prospective buyer that the
merchant is a swindler, or warning a student that his prospectivemerchant is a swindler, or warning a student that his prospective
teacher is an innovator or a deviant. Also, revealing the faults ofteacher is an innovator or a deviant. Also, revealing the faults of
weak narrators and forgers ofweak narrators and forgers of HADITHHADITH, and giving someone a candid, and giving someone a candid
appraisal of a person whom the former is thinking of marryingappraisal of a person whom the former is thinking of marrying

[e][e] If someone is commonly known by a nickname which he do notIf someone is commonly known by a nickname which he do not
object toobject to being called by it, although if there is some alternative waybeing called by it, although if there is some alternative way
to refer to him, it is preferable rather than nickname. When theto refer to him, it is preferable rather than nickname. When the
nickname signify evil or bad, avoid using it, even if he does not objectnickname signify evil or bad, avoid using it, even if he does not object
to people using it. This is to honour him and perhaps may serve asto people using it. This is to honour him and perhaps may serve as

[f][f] Someone who sins openlySomeone who sins openly, and has no qualms about his sins, and has no qualms about his sins

permissible to mention any of his other secret sins (those sins notpermissible to mention any of his other secret sins (those sins not

WARNING TO THOSE WHO SLANDER

““Should I not inform you as to who isShould I not inform you as to who is the most evil personthe most evil person? “They? “They

WARNING TO ALL MUSLIM

"O You Muslim (who claim yourself as one) with your mouth!"O You Muslim (who claim yourself as one) with your mouth!

annoyance towards other Muslims by making fun of themannoyance towards other Muslims by making fun of them

likes to search for the faults of his Muslim brother, Allah inlikes to search for the faults of his Muslim brother, Allah in

“Thus he who migrates for the sake of Allah and His Messenger,
then his migration is for Allah and His Messenger.
And he who migrates seeking to gain worldly benefits
or for the sake of marrying a woman,
then his migration is for that which he has intended.”

And withal, they were not enjoined aught but that theyAnd withal, they were not enjoined aught but that they

all that is false (all that is false (HHUNAFAA’UNAFAA’); ...“); ...“
((Qur’an: Bayyinat: 98: 5Qur’an: Bayyinat: 98: 5))

 Thus Arabic word “ikhlasw” meaning “sincerity”, can also mean
“purity” and be related to the Message of TAUHEED - as when the
Surah (Chapter) which profoundly explains the Oneness of Allah is
also called “Surah Al-Ikhlasw” (Q:112).
IKHLASW

 Similarly the kalimah (statement) of TAUHEED :
(There is no god except Allah)
is also called “KALIMAH-AL-IKHLASW” (pure or sincere Word); and
“KALIMAH-AL-TOY-YIBAH” (the good Word).

 As Muslims, upholdingAs Muslims, upholding TAUTAUHHEEDEED is absolutely imperative, and to dois absolutely imperative, and to do
so requires avoidingso requires avoiding SHIRKSHIRK..
 And the teachings of our ProphetAnd the teachings of our Prophet has removed all forms idolatroushas removed all forms idolatrous
practices and identified every apparent belief or practices to avoid,practices and identified every apparent belief or practices to avoid,
which are, or may lead to obviouswhich are, or may lead to obvious SHIRKSHIRK in worship (in worship (‘IBADAH‘IBADAH).).
 Yet, there is another, a subtle or hidden form ofYet, there is another, a subtle or hidden form of SHIRKSHIRK, which our, which our
ProphetProphet was so concerned about.was so concerned about.

REFLECT DEEPLY WHAT HE SAID:REFLECT DEEPLY WHAT HE SAID:

““Verily, what I fear the most for my community (ummah)Verily, what I fear the most for my community (ummah)
isis SHIRKSHIRK (ascribing partners) to Allah.(ascribing partners) to Allah.
I am not saying that they will worship the sun or theI am not saying that they will worship the sun or the
moon or idols, butmoon or idols, but it is in their being insincere in doingit is in their being insincere in doing
good deeds, not intending it for Allah’s sake but only togood deeds, not intending it for Allah’s sake but only to
please their hidden desiresplease their hidden desires.”.”

 From this, we must understand that we Muslims should never fall
prey to conceit nor forget the actual reason for our striving to do
good is, as an act of attesting to the Oneness of Allah; serving and
worshipping only Him.
 To be sincere therefore means:
“to negate all other considerations as the essential or primary
motive, except for the sake of Allah –
seeking His nearness (QURB) to please Him (REDHA) ”

 It is interesting that without truly striving to attest with TAUHEED –
to attest that only Allah is god, the One we were created to serve
and to worship to exclusively , then a person may take his / her
Nafs (self) or Hawa’ (desires) as ‘god’ – which may lead to the
spiritual disease of ‘ujub (self-conceit) and riya’ (ostentations).

 It is interesting that without truly striving to attest with TAUHEED –
to attest that only Allah is god, the One we were created to serve
and to worship to exclusively , then a person may take his / her

O our Lord! We do admit earnestly,O our Lord! We do admit earnestly,
that we have committed sins (excesses).that we have committed sins (excesses).

‘A-LAL- LA –ZO ASH-ROF-NAA
And we have exceeded the bounds, such that
we know we deserve the punishment.

TAGH-SI-LU -KUL- LA –TAGH-SI-LU -KUL- LA – HHAW-BAAAW-BAA
(Therefore O Allah, we beg You to) Accept our repentance,(Therefore O Allah, we beg You to) Accept our repentance,
Such that (Your acceptance of it) washes awaySuch that (Your acceptance of it) washes away
